Work in Canada from Nigeria: LMIA and LMIA-Exempt Work Permits
This guide explains how Nigerian professionals can secure a Canadian work permit and use it as a stepping stone to permanent residence.
LMIA-based work permit: A Canadian employer applies for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) to show no Canadian worker is available for the role. Once approved, you apply for the work permit. Common in healthcare, trades, and hospitality.
LMIA-exempt work permit: Under the International Mobility Program, categories include intra-company transfers, CUSMA professionals, spouses of international students, and Francophone Mobility (for French-speaking applicants destined outside Quebec).
Work permit to PR: After working in Canada for 12 months in a skilled occupation (TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3), you can enter the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) pool. Many provinces also have PNP streams for workers with a local job offer.
Key documents: Nigerian police certificate, ECA for foreign credentials, language test (IELTS/TEF), employer contract or LMIA approval, proof of funds, and biometrics.
Processing times from Nigeria (indicative): LMIA-based work permit 12-22 weeks; LMIA-exempt often shorter.
